“Helping businesses cut through complex challenges with smart strategies and personal attention to make right things happen.”

Tom Sheppard is a strategic-minded CFO partner. He combines strategy, finance and operations to help companies build, grow and improve their businesses. He asks the right questions, gets to the answers and can execute on decision implementation. He is an advisor to senior executives on evaluating and driving their strategic business decisions and works on such issues as new businesses, markets and channels; financing; mergers and acquisitions; strategic partnerships; supply chain strategy and responding to changes in their business. Clients range from pre-funding start-ups to major multi-national corporations.

Clients rely on him to evaluate complex issues; determine how things work; uncover barriers and opportunities; and develop practicable, cross-functional solutions and the teams and relationships needed to succeed. He provides deep experience in solving problems, managing challenging issues and getting things done. He is a leader, coach, mentor and evangelist for ideas, decisions and projects to drive needed change.

Tom’s work prior to joining cfos2go shaped both his breadth and depth. He worked with Hewlett-Packard, Apple Computer and others to develop market and product strategies to penetrate the retail channel for high technology products. His background in finance, investments, business research and analysis quickly brought in requests for a range of business and operational advisory projects, as well as to evaluate investments for major companies, advice on mergers & acquisitions and to be an interim CFO for two startups. In 1998, he started KPMG’s Strategic Business Services Group, which became the firm’s leading resource for bringing practical business decision making to large corporate projects across all of KPMG’s functional and industry practices. Clients included Fairchild Semiconductor, Western Digital, Ingram Micro, Chevron and Pentair Corporation. His industry experience spans electronics, software and hardware, distribution, consumer electronics, packaged good, industrial products, finance, media and entertainment.

Prior to his career in consulting he had a 15 year career in the institutional investment business. His last position there was as Vice President, Director of Research and Portfolio Manager for Bank of America Capital Management, where he co-managed a $5 billion equity portfolio. He was also West Coast Regional Manager for Martin Simpson & Company, a highly respected technology and healthcare investment boutique and was a Senior Investment Analyst in Dean Witter Reynolds’s, West Coast Technology Group.

Tom has an MBA from Xavier University, with a concentration in advanced business economics, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Miami University with a major in finance.

As a community steward, he volunteers and works with Trips for Kids, Novato Human Needs Center, Bayview Mission and the Valley Fire Volunteers of Calistoga.

I asked Tom to lead the business strategy, model and plan development for Exigent Elite. He delivered a comprehensive and well supported plan that was implementable and we are operating on it today. His analysis of the market and creativity was an integral part of putting together our business plan. He brings strong business sense, highly practical business knowledge; knows how things work and fit together; understands & builds business cases and develops unique, insightful, practical and implementable ideas. Additionally, his understanding of technology & IT systems, development and their practical uses are often keys in providing the underlying enablement of his approaches. Tom translates business needs and requirements to technologist and vice-a-versa and is a strong partner/leader/communicator between technologists, "C" level executives and all business areas needed or affected.

Tom also believes in strong accountability and provides an ability to build diverse and integrated teams to build workable solutions within timeframe demands. I would work with Tom again on any future endeavors.

Tom is an excellent strategic thinker with the unwavering ability to maintain focus and achieve the end goal. He challenged me to look at things in new ways, develop new ways doing things and to build confidence in my work and myself. He was able to build teams, build support and results by extracting needed insights and experience from each person and the business group involved making them a valuable part of the solution. He also had a great capacity for getting others to see and understand his vision and to this day, if I had an extremely complex business issue I wanted evaluated or explained in practical and usable terms, Tom would be my first call.
