Whether through donations or grants, a non-profit organization (NPO) must continuously raise funds in both positive and negative economies. This demand puts tremendous pressure on NPOs to expand or contract their stated missions and often leads to restricted and prohibited use for some donations. This is not the typical role of a public company or government CFO. Mission-driven organizations require CFOs who are familiar with and adept at working within the challenging and unique environment of non-profit regulation and law.
In our NPO practice group we have assembled a network of experts with years of experience guiding and advising non-profits. The practice is lead by a partner skilled in NPO financial guidance including tax, accounting, capital management, grant writing, and cutting edge services such as crowd funding. We offer consulting services on an on-going or project basis, provide interim NPO financial executives, and recruitment services for direct-hire NPO financial positions. Further, the Consulting CFO can work alone or assemble a team to execute a short-term crucial project or take on a long-term responsibility.
Practice Leaders – Jess Gutierrez and Jack Doty
Jess Gutierrez has supported non-profit organizations as a senior executive, Chairman of the Board, and non-board member advisor. His work with non-profit organizations during the last twenty five years includes supporting foundations, research institutions, land trusts, and children’s support agencies. He works with management teams and Boards on the development of financial reporting systems, policies and procedures, strategic planning, forecasts and budgets, and recruiting and training accounting personnel.
Jack Doty co-leads the Non-Profit (NPO) Practice Group at CFOs2GO. He has board seats with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the San Francisco Center for Economic Development and the Steering Committee of the NorCal district of the American Diabetes Association. He is a past director of the San Francisco Coalition for Better Housing and the Association for Corporate Growth and was the founding president and director of both the Lower Nob Hill Apartment Hotel District and the Community Association Management Institute.
Industry Expert – Denise Howell
Denise Howell is a member of the Non-Profit Group at CFOs2GO. She has a track record of building productive collaborations with chief executives, management teams, boards, investment advisors and donors. Most recently, she served as Chief Financial Officer with VolunteerMatch for 6 years. Her experience includes professional and regulatory compliance, reporting and financial analysis, team building, full-cycle accounting, risk management, implementation of controls, reporting systems, investment oversight and audits. Denise is well -respected for her stewardship of assets including, corporate, philanthropic and government grants and contracts, as well as estates and trusts.
The Challenging Role of the NPO CFO
The CFO must provide the NPO the analytical skills, processes, and governance knowledge needed to support the mission and stay financially healthy. In addition, the CFO must help the NPO implement practical, analytical, and sustainable approaches to program decision-making and instill discipline that can be leveraged to deliver on the organization’s mission.
Attracting a good NPO CFO is not easy. They must work comfortably with the NPO board and CEO/Executive Director, be the sole expert in financial matters and able to articulate this position, and generally supportive of the organizations mission.
